Applications for manual winches
Our manual hand winches are used successfully in various different situations. Hand winches have the big advantage that they do not require electricity or oil pressure to function, unlike hydraulic winches and electric winches. The mechanical power is provided exclusively by hand via the crank. Manual winches are screw mounted, making them quick and easy to install ready for use. Another advantage of these winches is their low weight.
Thanks to their compact design, mechanical winches don’t require much mounting space, e.g. on a car trailer. The body of the winch itself is very compact and therefore takes up very little room. The hand crank is also detachable, which saves space. Our hand winches can be used to easily pull rolling loads onto a trailer. They are also used in workshops, hangars and on construction sites. With pulling capacities of up to 1.15 tonnes, our manual hand winches can move heavy loads. If used together with our snatch blocks, manual winches can also be used for lifting loads safely. Our mechanical winches are also employed in the agricultural and forestry sectors. As you can see, there are a wide range of possible applications for our hand winches.
Key differences between mechanical winches
When it comes to hand winches, there are many different models on the market. They range from basic models at low prices to professional winches fitted with the necessary safety devices, like ours. What should you look out for when buying a manual hand winch?
- Steel structure: The winch should be made from robust, hardened and galvanised steel. This ensures that it will work well over the long term. High-quality galvanising is crucial to prevent rusting.
- Load pressure brake: Important! This brake holds the attached load even if the hand crank is released while pulling a load. This prevents the crank from turning backwards and the load is held securely on the winch cable or strap.
- Automatic freespool: Easily unspool the cable or strap from the winch drum. Without this free-spooling feature, you have to unwind the cable or strap slowly and laboriously using the hand crank.
- Detachable hand crank: After you have finished using your winch, you can simply detach the hand crank. This means that the crank is out of the way and it also prevents unwanted operation of the hand winch.
There is a lot to consider when deciding which is the best hand winch to buy. Our manual winches from AL-KO come with all these functions and important safety features already built-in to every model. In addition, these hand winches comply with the latest European Standard EN 13157. The winches meet the requirements of the CE Directive and the Machinery Directive.

Hand winch
(7)ProLux mechanical hand winches are used for pulling or lifting loads in many different applications. By turning a manually operated crank, a galvanised cable or strap is wound onto the winch. The winch gear ratio of the manual winch enables high pulling power without extreme physical effort. A load pressure brake holds the load when the cable or strap is tensioned, i.e. under load. We supply AL-KO hand winches made from galvanised steel with traction forces ranging from 0.5 to 1.15 tonnes.
